The release of Wii Fit in Japan has helped Nintendo race out to an early 2008 sales lead against the Sony PlayStation 3.

The Nintendo Wii has gone home to 479,931 Japanese households during January according to Enterbrain marketing data company.

This compares with a solid showing by the Sony PlayStation 3 which shipped 165,719 consoles for the same period.

The numbers were compiled before the release of Super Smash Bros Brawl, which hit the market on Jan 31, but did include the highly successful Wii Fit period.

Wii Fit with its wireless balance board and further promise of video game based activities has sold 1.21 million units during the nine weeks it has been on sale in Japan

Microsoft's Xbox 360 continues to be a distant third on the home turf of Nintendo and Sony, shipping 27,044 units for January.

Wii Fit is slated for a Q2 release elsewhere in the world.
