NetApp has promoted Tom Georgens to the newly created role of company president and chief operating officer, and Tom Mendoza to the new role of vice chairman.

Georgens was previously head of product operations. Before joining NetApp in 2005, his career included positions at Engenio, LSI Logic Storage Systems, LSI Logic, and EMC.

He holds BSc and MEng degrees in computer and systems engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic, and an MBA from Babson College.

"Tom Georgens has demonstrated strong leadership and passion for our values and culture," said CEO Dan Warmenhoven.

Mendoza's role as vice chairman will be customer advocacy.

"Tom Mendoza is an icon and a legend at NetApp and among our customers and partners," said Warmenhoven.

"Our customers know him to be a trusted advisor and listener. Our employees know that he lives our values with passion every day. Freeing him from operational responsibilities to focus his energy on our customers and culture will help us become even more responsive to the market and deeply attuned to the transformation happening in today's data centers."

Mendoza's executive career in technology spans 31 years. He joined NetApp in 1994, and has served as president since 2000.

He holds a BA in economics from the University of Notre Dame.
