iQ2 subscribers will also be able to access Foxtel's online electronic program guide via the internet or  3G mobile phone to remotely schedule recordings.

Williams also revealed Foxtel has rebroadcast agreements for all HD free-to-air channels except the Seven Network, presenting a serious challenge to Seven's high definition TiVo personal video recorder, also due to launch this year in time for the Beijing Olympics in August.

Foxtel will use the MPEG4 compression format to deliver its high definition programming, along with 5.1 Dolby surround sound. All high definition content will be broadcast at its native resolution rather the upscaled from standard definition.

"Foxtel is not just dipping its toe in the HD pond, we are immersing ourselves by delivering Australian viewers four, 24 by 7 HD channels of some of the greatest television brand names who are leaders in HD content and delivery," Williams said.

"We have taken particular care to ensure our HD channels are the best looking HD channels in Australia."
