Qtrax, the supposedly ‘legal’ p2p music download service, is still
enjoying its 15 minutes of fame as the first beta version becomes
available for download at last, but while it’s easy to download, once
you’re in, you quickly discover that despite promises of 25 million
free tracks, Qtrax is still NoTrax for now. Save your bandwidth, as for now, Qtrax is a waste of space - although it still holds a glimmer of potential. Finally available for download, the download proceeds well enough, and the program installs. After that, you go through a process to register, which includes the usual: which country you’re in, your name, email address, username, password, SMS phone number (for SMS messages Qtrax clearly intends sending in the future), a secret question and answer, and a capcha text code to type in. But clicking ‘submit’ just brings up a 404 error, as Qtrax is, right now at least, receiving a tsunami of traffic from all over the world, even though most people have probably heard the news that Qtrax doesn’t yet have the support of the four major music labels: Sony BMG, EMI, Universal and Warner. The error means the registration wasn’t completed and will have to be tried again later. Even after registration is complete, users will still have to wait for ‘activation codes’ to be sent out to users, something that Qtrax say will be done ‘in stages’. Then downloads of music from the big four's library will actually be possible. There are some featured artists on the 'Home Page' of the Qtrax software. I clicked on the Daft Punk link, and was taken to an error message that says the page is unavailable. Clicking on refresh, the page comes up showing more of their songs, and as I clicked around another box popped up showing Daft Punk songs seemingly available for download. Unfortunately, double clicking on the file or clicking the download button brings up a message that states ‘downloads are coming soon’ and shows a static picture of a large egg vibrating and just starting to crack open. So, the software is currently very flaky, with registration proving difficult and even once in, the need to wait for an ‘activation code’ to allow downloads of something, anything, from the Qtrax software. Qtrax says it has well over 9 million tracks available, and right now says there are 11485 users online at the same time, with none available for download at this time. But what hope is there without the four major labels and some updates to the software and their backend infrastructure ASAP? Please read onto page 2. |
