EMC is using its recently acquired Mozy operation to deliver an enterprise-oriented remote backup service.

MozyEnterprise runs on EMC's Fortress multi-tenant SaaS platform to provide remote backup of notebooks, desktops and servers.

The basic remote backup capability has been targeted at corporate customers with the addition of enhanced security (leveraging EMC's ownership of RSA), enterprise-class availability and support, and physical seeding of up to 2T of data to reduce the amount of data transferred over the Internet during the first backup.

MozyEnterprise will be sold by EMC's direct sales force, resellers such as eFileCabinet, and partners such as Verizon Business.

The service is currently offered only in North America, and costs  $US5.25 per month plus $US0.70 per gigabyte protected per month for desktops and notebooks, and $9.25 plus $2.35 for servers.

MozyEnterprise will be extended to other countries later in 2008. It is expected in Australia and New Zealand during the second half of the year.

"EMC's Mozy is targeted at those organisations looking for a cost-effective, consistent, and dependable way to back up corporate desktops, laptops, and/or Windows servers in remote or branch offices," said Shane Moore, EMC's product marketing manager for Australia and New Zealand. "Further, the savings on data centre space, power, cooling, and IT management time can be reallocated for other purposes."

EMC acquired Mozy operator Berkeley Data Systems in October 2007. At the time, the company said it would retain the Mozy brand.
