Telecom's GM business solutions, Greg McAlister, said Telecom was implementing an extensive communications plan "to make sure customers are aware of the closure, and give them plenty of time to take up one of the new options to use mobile phones while in Australia." The optimal solution is a dual mode GSM/CDMA "Worldphone" - the Samsung W531 which Telecom sells for $NZ299. However it means that New Zealanders wanting the ability to roam to Australia have a choice of only one model. Telecom is offering any Kiwis venturing across the ditch the loan of one free (exclusive of call charges) for the duration of their trip. Also, Telecom says that new dual mode handsets will be available later this year. Customers who loan a phone can use their own mobile number and voicemail and will be billed standard roaming charges. McAlister said Telecom had identified the business and residential customers who regularly roam to Australia and was making them a range of special offers, including subsidised and free WorldMode phones. Telecom said that account teams from its corporate customer division Gen-i had been working with corporate clients to ensure their roaming needs are covered. Options provided to Gen-i customers include free upgrades to a range of roaming capable voice and data products and use of loan devices. Telecom is building a new WCDMA mobile network which will be available from late 2008. Customers on that network will be able to roam onto any of the Australian networks.
