Skype coming to PSP E-mail

A forthcoming software update to the PlayStation Portable 2000 series will deliver Skype calling to users of the handheld console.

The software is scheduled for release late this month, and when installed it will add a Skype icon to the Network category of the PSP's home menu. Clicking the icon will allow users to sign into their existing Skype account or to create a new one.

The usual Skype features including free Skype-to-Skype calling and the optional (and paid) SkypeOut to regular numbers and SkypeIn from the PSTN are available, along with the ability to change call forwarding, voicemail and other settings.

Skype on PSP requires a Memory Stick Duo and a compatible audio input device. An Internet connection is also necessary.

In a curiously worded statement, Sony officials said the company "will deploy various measures to meet users' demand and vigourously promote the expansion of the PSP platform as a handheld entertainment system to enjoy a variety of interactive digital entertainment."
