New Australian Government tries totalitarian Net censorship E-mail

It’s good to see that Electronic Frontiers Australia has been quick to decry the Government’s plans. EFA Chair Dale Clapperton was quick to say in a press release that: “Waving the 'save the children' flag may be good politics, but it ignores serious technological problems which will likely cause the proposed scheme to fail. Furthermore, Australia is supposed to be a liberal democracy where adults have the freedom to say and read what they want, not just what the Government decides is 'appropriate' for them."

Clapperton continued that: "These announcements smack of the condescending paternalism which contributed to the downfall of the Howard government. The proposals threaten the free speech rights of every Australian, and our concerns will not be silenced by Government sound bites equating free speech with access to child pornography."

"Who decides what is 'appropriate' for adult Australians to read on the Internet, and according to what standards?", asked Clapperton. "What will happen if the Government decides that information about abortion or gay marriage is 'inappropriate' at the behest of Family First Senator Steve Fielding?"

The EFA says that the implementation of the proposal, “insofar as it is technically possible, would cause significant technical and administrative headaches for Australia's Internet Service Providers”. Clapperton says that: "Anyone with a better understanding of the Internet than the Minister will tell you this system simply will not work. But a lot of taxpayers' money will be wasted if we try."

Clapperton also said that: "Unfortunately, ISP based filtering will not make the Internet safe for children, and may even cause harm in and of itself. If parents are deceived into believing that a 'filtered' Internet service is safe for children, they will be less likely to take sensible precautions such as supervising their children while they use the Internet."

Even Telstra, for once, has it right, with Telstra BigPond spokesman Craig Middleton telling the Australian that: "We stand alongside the IIA and other ISPs in the view that PC-based filtering, in the hands of a responsible parent, is the only workable solution."

So, unless we really want Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Senator Stephen Conroy to turn into the Chairman Rudd and Comrade Conroy that the previous Government insinuated we’d get with all those ‘Union-Labor’ attack ads, and unless we want the Commonwealth of Australia with a fast and uncensored Internet to turn into the People’s Ruddpublic of Ruddstralia with a crippled Off-ternet... Fight This Proposal!!

Our freedoms and our liberty are at stake. Remember, people should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people, especially governments that seek to impose draconian censorship on its citizens!
