For no apparent reason, PSP outsells Wii in Japan E-mail

With no real compelling new content the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) has managed to rein in the highly sort after Nintendo Wii game console in the latest figures from Japan.

Possibly due to hardware shortages, possibly due to a subtle shift in consumer thinking, or maybe just a fluke week, either way, the PSP has edged out the Wii for second position on the Japanese game hardware leader board.

The Nintendo DS hand held still holds the title, shifting 222,144 units in the week ending December 16, but the new silver medal holder is the PSP moving 184,610 units.

This is more than double its previous week sales of 91,481

The Wii consolidated third position with 170,558 more Japanese waggling Wii-motes , the PS3 at 63,720 and the PS2 at 18,025.

Though strong for the Xbox 360, its sales of 8,561 for the same week are still lagging behind its Japanese origin competitors.
