FileMaker makes good on 8.5 Leopard promise E-mail

As promised, FileMaker has released an update that allows the use of version 8.5 of its eponymous database software under Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard before the end of the year.

The FileMaker Pro 8.5v2 updater works with the regular and Advanced version of the package to overcome a major incompatibility with Mac OS X 10.5 that would cause a crash when creating or opening files unless the system language and region matched.

This was a major problem for users in various countries including the UK and Australia, and caused considerable angst when Leopard was first released. While 8.5 was not the current version, it had only recently been discontinued. FileMaker subsequently reversed its initial decision that only 9.0 would be updated for Leopard.

Version 8.5v2 also restores the ability to save or export files in Microsoft Excel format.

The Instant Web Publishing feature in FileMaker 8.5 does not and will not work under Mac OS X 10.5.
