Google Talkabout speaks to me with new chat bots E-mail

Remember those sci-fi movies and books where humans and interplanetary aliens interact and speak to each other using electronic helmet translating devices? If not, then maybe you're too young but anyway Google has taken the first step towards making on the fly real-time dual-language conversations a reality.

The new Google translation bots can be used with Google Talk for conversations between 24 different language pairs. A really interesting application, however, is that it's possible to take the translation system on the road using a pocket device such as a BlackBerry.

To make your translator as universal as possible, just add any of the 24 other translation bots to the system. They're named using two-letter language abbreviations as "[from language]2[to language]@bot.talk.google.com", and the supported language pairs are: ar2en, de2en, de2fr, el2en, en2ar, en2de, en2el, en2es, en2fr, en2it, en2ja, en2ko, en2nl, en2ru, en2zh, es2en, fr2de, fr2en, it2en, ja2en, ko2en, nl2en, ru2en, zh2en. So, for French to German translation, talk to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

While this is basically so far just a means of conducting dual-language IM text chats, it's not too hard to imagine eventually developing voice recognition for the system, making the sci-fi language translator of the past a reality in the not too distant future.
