Palm Treo 750 owners on the Telstra Next G network finally get the chance to upgrade to the Windows Mobile 6 OS from today, months after the WM6 update for customers of the Treo on other carriers.
Australians using the Palm Treo 750 on Telstra’s 3.5G HSPA Next G network are finally able to download the free update to WM6, after entering their Treo 750’s serial number into the WM6 download section of Palm’s site.

Treo 750 customers on 3 or Vodafone networks in Australia have already had the upgrade available for free download for several months.

WM6 provides a range of additional features over WM5, with the exception of no support for the BlackBerry Connect (BBC) client, so if you’re a BBC user take note – don’t upgrade to WM6 if you want to keep on using the BlackBerry connect service.

Palm says that the new WM6 update for Next G takes advantage of Next G’s faster download speeds, offers “enhanced security and productivity tools such as the support of storage card data encryption and the ability for IT departments to wipe data remotely if a device is lost”.

Coupled with Exchange Server 2007, or Exchange Server 2003 SP2, WM6 offers ‘Direct Push’ technology for email, calendar, contacts and tasks, allows the email client to read HTML-formatted messages, lets users set an ‘out-of-office’ message from their Treo, offes an improved calendar, offers in-phone meeting requests to be sent while also improving scheduling conflict scenarios, offers Mini SD card encryption, a remote data wipe service and improvements to the Treo password and PIN security systems,

Olivier Rozay, country manager for Palm (Aust and NZ) said that: “Palm and Microsoft’s alliance continues to bring the best mobile experience to Treo customers. The Treo 750’s connection to Exchange Server without the need for extra servers and middleware, combined with our unique ease of use, makes the Treo a win-win solution for IT departments and business users as they seek the most of their smartphone.”

Next G Treo 750 customers can only download the WM6 update once, as per Microsoft’s limitations, meaning customers must not lose their WM6 download if they ever wish to install it again for whatever reason. That said, WM6 users cannot revert back to WM5, although a restoration tool is available from Palm through the WM6 download page should customers find themselves troubled by any issues.

Palm says the WM6 update is available until the 31st of October, 2008.
