iPhone gets 'upgraded' again: GPS, video and plenty more E-mail

Recording video with the iPhone’s digital camera is something users have wanted ever since it was discovered that, while video playback was one of the headline features, camcorder-style video recording wasn’t even mentioned.

Now a fellow by the nickname of ‘Drunknbass’ from the Monster and Friends Design Studio has claimed the first iPhone video recordings, and has released a demo version that records 5 seconds of video at 10 frames per second (fps).

Drunknbass says in a post that “The final app will be able to record somewhere from 15-30+ fps and should have an unlimited file length”, meaning it should offer video recording capabilities that outdo virtually all other phones, although there will be competition from the likes of the Nokia N95 and the LG Viewty with 640x480 video recording modes.

The actual release app will show us all how good the iPhone’s digital camera really will be at recording longer sequences of video, but a world of YouTube uploads direct from the iPhone can’t be far away – it’s already possible with competing smartphones to a range of video sharing sites, with the LG Viewty including a YouTube upload option as standard.

There even a way to download files through the Safari web browser right to your iPhone – iPhone Atlas has the instructions.

For more iPhone features, an entry at MetaFilter points to how you can “read comics and manga; play NES , Gameboy, or LucasArts adventure games; experiment with crayon physics; download files; emulate HP calculators; and sync without iTunes”, while also pointing to early software versions of Playstation emulation and being able to send a picture MMS message, amongst a whole host of the web applications that Apple originally wanted developers to create.

While many of the programs available for the iPhone remain ‘proof of concept’ or ‘beta’ programs, a number are improving and have had several updated new versions, something that will hopefully accelerate once the iPhone SDK is finally launched, with new and upgraded software capabilities arriving on a regular basis.

Clearly Apple will incorporate a range of new features in future iPhone models, be it GPS or a better camera, but you’d expect it would all be subject to Apple’s size, battery life, design, style, software, ease of use and other considerations.

But that doesn’t stop us from listing some of the most things which could easily find their way into an iPhone 2. For a list of just some of the things we’d like to see in future iPhones, please click over to the conclusion on page 3!
