The new version of Parallels Desktop for Mac, the popular virtualisation software, provides a variety of new and improved features.

High on the list is enhanced support for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard giving better performance, and the ability to sync an iPhone with Windows.

Other changes include improved DirectX and OpenGL performance, the ability to change sound devices such as headsets between Windows and Mac OS X on the fly, improved Windows Vista and XP performance, a tool to explore virtual drives without starting a virtual machine, the ability to migrate a Windows Boot Camp partition to a Parallels virtual disk, and look and feel enhancements to the Coherence feature that allows Windows applications to appear on the Mac OS X desktop.

The feature update is being pushed out to existing users via the auto-update mechanism.

A free 15-day trial key is offered to allow potential customers to evaluate the software.

In related news, the company has begun offering a Premium Edition of Parallels Desktop 3.0 that includes Acronis Disk Director, Acronis True Image Home, and Kaspersky Internet Security for $US99.99. The price of Desktop for Mac alone is $US79.99.
