Macquarie Telecom's hosting division has changed its preferred server supplier to Sun Microsystems after a like-for-like comparison with major competitors, including Dell and HP showed, it could reduce power consumption by up to 60 percent.
Macquarie says that Sun Microsystems was selected following a 'like for like' comparison of servers from a broad range of vendors including Dell and HP....CPU speed was the prevailing benchmark with parallel energy consumption compared across the board. In the assessment, Sun servers running both AMD and Intel processors proved to be up to 60 percent more energy efficient than other vendor technology."

Macquarie Hosting has committed to a rolling contract initially worth $1 million for the installation of 200 Sun Fire X64 Series servers following a six month evaluation. It expects the move to initially cut power consumption by 650,000 kilowatt hours per year. According to Energy Australia, the production of this quantity of electrical energy would release 600 tonnes of CO2 (however the means of electricity generation was not specified), and an average household consumes 7,000 KwH of electricity annually. According to current average electricity prices provided by utility services company, Utilicor this reduction in consumption would represent an annual cost saving of around $26,000.

Macquarie says six months of energy consumption monitoring across the data centre revealed its greatest energy consumers to be servers, switches, firewalls and air conditioning units which accounted for over 85 percent of the total cost of operation.

"There's a lot of vendor hype around green IT in the market at present," said Aidan Tudehope, managing director, hosting, Macquarie Telecom. "On the basis of our study findings, with an absolute focus on reducing our carbon footprint, we're now moving to Sun," He added: "The move to overhaul our procurement strategy according to green criteria is part of Macquarie Hosting's commitment to greening our supply chain and reducing our energy consumption and impact on the environment. We are finding more and more customers are aware of the green IT agenda and are asking what Macquarie Hosting is doing about environmental issues in response. We're committed to staying on the front foot in our approach and this initiative is just another step on the journey."{moscomment}
