The N95’s new firmware still has a few surprises up its sleeve. Also included is Nokia’s new Search 4.0 software which dramatically improves the N95’s internal search capabilities is now integrated on the main standby screen, as well as letting you click through to a web search through the Windows Live Search service.

Putting a search function on the standby screen makes it a snap to search for contacts, messages, emails, music, web pages, notes or data other on your phone, although it makes it even easier for other people to mine through your personal data if they get access to your phone and it’s not password protected. Perhaps biometric fingerprint readers will come to phones sooner rather than later because of these security issues…

In addition, Nokia’s new N-Gage gaming client is now loaded onto the N95 as standard and includes two previews, both very playable, one being a racing game called Asphalt and the other being the FIFA soccer game, although I was much better at racing than kicking and passing in FIFA.

The N-Gage client also has a very cool 9.8 second intro gaming video that smoothly morphs through a range of gaming scenarios, obviously in an attempt to impress us and encourage us to buy games through the online N-Gage service. As long as the games are easy and comfortable to play on the handsets, and are actually good games, Nokia’s new N-Gage strategy should be much more successful this time around.

There have been some complains about the firmware, with a posting at Nokia Europe’s website and discussion board, claiming a hissing noise in the earphones and speaker, something I do hear slightly when my headphones are on and I’m moving between applications or loading something, but which I can’t hear when the music is playing.

Two wishes I have for the next firmware update include being able to change the volume in 5% increments – currently it is still fixed to 10% increments – and for Nokia to enable gapless playback of mp3 files that are part of a compilation that is mixed. It’s a standard capability of CD players these days and a part of the music experience. For the longest time it was the iPod that couldn’t do gapless playback of individual tracks, but that’s now been fixed – c’mon Nokia, please fix this in the N95 and just make it a standard feature.

The improvements to the N95 truly transform it into a new phone, and give it a massive new lease of life. It’s now so much more enjoyable to use this phone, especially when you want to use many of its features because they are available and you want to use them!

For another take on what’s cool about the new N95 firmware, a user called ‘stop_gap’ posted a great review after one day of using the v20 firmware at Nokia’s UK discussion board detailing the extra battery life and other enhancements.

For details on how to get the new firmware, what to look out for, Mac details and more, please read on to page 3!
