Nokia’s new v20 firmware for the feature laden N95 transforms it into a new phone. The new features fulfill Nokia’s promise of a ‘multimedia computer’ for N95 owners – on PCs and Macs!
Nokia’s newest firmware update for the N95, a technological tour-de-force that has only really been bettered by the new N95 8GB, gives original N95 owners a major ‘must have’ and free performance upgrade that transforms it into the phone it should have been when it first launched.

Among Nokia N95's phone transforming features are a fast camera, much longer battery life and slick new memory management that lets you run multiple programs at the same time.

Instructions on how to upgrade to the new firmware, the pitfalls to watch out for that we experienced and how to avoid them, and details of how Nokia has made it easy for Mac users to sync their N95 to iPhoto, iTunes, iCal, the Address Book and more are listed further in this article.

So, what’s in the new firmware? Nokia’s Software Update News page has details of the new 20.0.015 firmware, which they say includes: “battery, stability & performance improvements enabling you to run faster and longer - giving you up to three more hours of music (up to 30% increase, from 9h to 12h of music playback).”

The news article continues that: “This release also includes a new version of Nokia Maps which provides faster positioning, faster Map Loader, and free 3-day navigation. Free N-Gage demo games are included and other games are available via Download! With the Nokia Music Store now live in the United Kingdom, users can enjoy the convenience of instant over-the-air downloads, regardless of where they are.”

According to WhatMobile, there are a number of other changes in the new firmware, all of which I’m able to confirm, as I’ve updated my N95 to the v20 firmware.

The list of changes with my own observations includes:

- A new welcome application with cool new video clips and explanations
- New camera software, much faster shot-to-shot times, a very cool ‘processing image’ message that re-assures you and then quickly disappears, and a grid mode that lets you compose a shot
- If the camera shutter is already open, you can now do a ‘long press’ on the camera button to launch the camera software
- Browsing through your gallery of images and videos is now super smooth and fast
- There’s a new “My Nokia” program, which reportedly includes SMS tips and a mobile web portal system, but as yet it’s unavailable in Australia
- A new demand paging memory management system for ROM applications with 30 plus MB free RAM after booting which dramatically improves the N95’s multitasking capabilities and effectively removing the dreaded ‘out of memory’ scenario.
- Faster boot time (that I personally noticed)
- The multimedia menu hasn’t been updated to the nicer N95 8GB multimedia menu, but it’s slick and fast as was fixed in the v12 firmware update.
- The keypress bug that affected SMS users appears to have been eliminated.

What else is in the new N95 firmware, where you get it, where you can find Nokia’s great new PC Suite 2.0 beta and how Mac users go effortlessly sync their N95’s and Mac OS X (Leopard, too) – please read onto the next page now!
