US PS3 sales increase 192% since price drop E-mail

It used to be the PS3xpensive, but since the recent price drop introducing at 40GB PS3 for US $399, sales have ‘more than doubled’, no doubt putting quite a smile on Sony’s dial.
Sony’s strategy of releasing cheaper PS3 models has finally worked in boosting PS3 sales quite nicely, increasing sales by 192% across the US $499 80GB PS3 and the US $399 40GB PS3 models, ‘more than doubling’ sales during November.

This is despite the inability of the new 40GB PS3 to play PS2 titles, although finally, more PS3 titles and the cheaper price have opened the wallets of fickle console gaming consumers.

Although no official figures are yet available for November, October’s sales figures for console sales come courtesy of research firm NPD Group, who estimate that there were 121,000 PS3s shipped in the US, compared with 519,000 Wii’s, 366,000 Xbox 360’s and 184,000 of the older, but clearly still popular, PS2 gaming console.

Coupled with the price cut from Sony has come their biggest ever holiday shopping season marketing onslaught, as they battle to capture the hearts and minds of consumers thinking of the perennially out-of-stock Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360 Halo 3 juggernaught.

Nintendo have just hit a goal with ‘Super Mario Galaxy’, while also releasing promised titles such as Metroid Prime, and are still outselling all competitors with retailers advising people to get in quick if they want to secure a Wii before Christmas, with incoming stocks often selling out within hours, if not faster.

Still, if you think 2007 has been a watershed year in console gaming, 2008 promises to be even bigger and better still, as developers push themselves to deliver blockbuster games that will sell in the millions.

2008 is the year that everyone in the console gaming business enters a new level, never previously entered, taking gaming, home entertainment and console computing to new heights. Just how good it will be we’re yet to find out, but we’re in no doubt it’ll be an absolute blast, in more ways than one!
