Australian telecoms service provider, Telarus, has added cellular services to its portfolio by becoming an mobile virtual network operator on the Vodafone network.
There are three product offerings under the Telarus Mobile banner – Telarus Home Mobile, Telarus Business Mobile and Telarus Corporate Mobile. Telarus Home Mobile plans include options for hardware rebates, enabling customers to purchase hardware from Telarus over a 24-month repayment period. Telarus Business Mobile plans also provide options for hardware rebates. Customers have the option of placing several services on one plan and using the combined rebate to purchase more handsets. Under the Corporate Mobile offering, customers are offered a hardware rebate with all usage included in the minimum spend and "intra-account" calls are also heavily discounted.

Data services are presently delivered only through GPRS capable handsets. Telarus CEO, Jules Rumsey, told iTWire that data services via GPRS or HSDPA modems were not presently offered. "We are looking at that but not necessarily on Vodafone. We have had a look at iBurst and Unwired as well as the various 3G data offerings."

Rumsey said the impetus to launch Telarus Mobile had come from existing customers of Telarus' fixed line services. "They have wanted to consolidate their account such that they can extend the benefits they receive in terms of service and account management from Telarus to their mobile phones."

He acknowledged that the mobile market was already very competitive but said: "There are plenty of people out there, particularly in the SME space who don't want to use one of the carriers...It is pretty confusing the way many providers structure their plans. We have made a definite effort to keep things simple."

Rumsey said that Telarus Mobile would be offered both by its direct sales team and its channel partners that number around 40. He expected sales to be split roughly 50:50 between the two. He added: "Over the next 12 months, we expect to see mobile services becoming a significant part of our overall revenues and we will be releasing additional mobile services over the coming months."

Earlier this year Telarus announced a partnership with Aruba Networks to provide a fixed mobile convergence offering,  using Aruba wireless access points. The technology is designed to operate with WiFi enabled cellphones to enable them to both make and receive calls, via VoIP over WiFi and an IP PBX when within an organisation's office and via a cellular network elsewhere.

It hopes to be able to offer handover between WiFi and cellular networks but Rumsey said the technology to do this was not yet available.{moscomment}
