An Australian social networking website is dedicated to prising the cyber generation away from their computer screens, out into the real world and meeting face to face to indulge in group activities of all kinds.
Founder Jelle Marechal told iTWire that the site had been in existence in various forms for about three years, and had grown purely by word of mouth. "We've now developed it to a stage and have enough members that we feel we can tell the world about it," he said. Marechal said that www.getalife.com.au had attracted 30,000 members who between them have created more than 8000 activities and 1000 active interest groups. At any time its calendar features more than 250 upcoming events across Australia's capital cities."
Marechal said: "It is clear that Getalife has struck a chord in the hearts and minds of singles, couples, travellers, migrants and just ordinary metro-living Australians who are not seeking to build virtual friendships by only spending time on a computer. Instead, they are people looking for alternative, contemporary and independent ways to connect with people in real life, get involved in a wide range of activities, meet people and find friendships (or even love) on their own terms. Whenever, wherever, whatever."
At present the site carries no advertising, it is funded by subscription fees: members pay between $3 and $6 per month depending on their level of involvement. Users can start groups around activities that interest them and they then become the 'owner' of those groups. For example, one group is dedicated to finding Sydney's best pizza restaurant . "A person suggests their outstanding pizza joint and we go as a group to sample, enjoy, and comment." It held its first pizza sampling in March and has since attracted almost 100 members. {moscomment}
