Sales of the Sony PlayStation 3 have more than doubled this month. The reduction of US$100 of the 80GB model and the introduction of the 40GB model have spurred the PS3 fans into taking the plunge on the games console cum media hub.Featured Whitepaper

This rose to 100,000 units the following week, when the new (non PS2 backwards compatibility) 40GB PS3 was introduced to the market at US$399. "It's the breakthrough we've been anticipating," Sony CEO Howard Stringer told the Associated Press. "We've been holding our breath." Sony are of course making a loss on hardware for each sale, but on the flip side they are getting another high definition Blu-ray drive into a home at the same time. It is a long term strategy in a war on two fronts, gaming and digital home entertainment. On the local Australian front, Sony have revealed that the PS3 has recently reached the milestone sales of 100,000. Despite being third amongst their peers of Nintendo and Microsoft in this generation, this milestone was actually reached in a shorter period than the phenomenally successful PlayStation 2. Given that the only PS3 on sale now in Australia is the 40GB model, which does not have the ability to play PS2 games, continuing PlayStation 2 sales are important in the region. At the eGames and Entertainment Expo being held in Melbourne this weekend, Adrian Christie from Sony Entertainment stated that “According to GfK, the PlayStation 2 has been dominating the last 12 months of software sales. Based on figures for a rolling calendar year, (ending October 07) PlayStation 2 software accounted for 50% of all value generated by the sale of video games in Australia (this figure includes all home and handheld consoles).” Michael Ephraim, Managing Director, SCE Australia and New Zealand commented; “The PlayStation 2 business is as strong as ever and we will continue to support this platform all the way through 2008 with the release of strong new games in a variety of genres.” |
