PS3 update features remote power-up E-mail

PlayStation 3 firmware version 2.00 allows a PS3 to be switched on or off by remote control from a PlayStation Portable, increasing the utility of the Remote Play function.

According to Sony officials this makes the PS3/PSP link "a truly global experience" - hyperbole perhaps, but there is a lot to be said for a remote access system that doesn't require one end to be left running all the time, especially in these days of carbon consciousness.

In case you don't own a PSP, there are other features in the update. Personal music and photo playlists can now be created, and the XMB can be customised.

Sony's announcement mentions "a host of other enhancements" but leaves us in the dark as to what they might be, other than access to PlayStation News via the XMB and a PlayStation Network category.

The software also includes a free trial of Trend Micro Web Security that will run to at least the end of April 2008, but at some stage you'll need to pay up if you want to keep using that service. The price has yet to be announced.
