He claimed that: "The Forum's work is now in full flow, with the major femtocell vendors and component providers actively working with operators to ensure that their products interoperate and meet the necessary demands to ensure successful widespread deployments."

The Femto Forum works to promote the uptake of femtocell technologies through open standards, market education and ecosystem development. It has established four working groups which address the key issues affecting the femtocell industry: Regulatory; Network and Interoperability; Radio and Physical Layer; and Marketing and Promotion.

It claims that these working groups have worked over the past three months to agree the key issues to be addressed to ensure the rapid and effective deployment of femtocells to support a wide variety of customer propositions and operator business models.

• Motorola trialling femtocells in Europe

In the latest development in the femtocell market, Motorola has announced that it has completed end-to-end testing of its 3G femtocell technology and has begun trialling these with a major European operator, which it has not named.

Joe Cozzolino, corporate vice president and general manager Motorola Home & Networks Mobility EMEA, said: "We offer a fully integrated and tested end-to-end solution, based on open standard interfaces, which includes a range of femtocell customer premises equipment and 3G devices, a core network concentrator, systems integration services and a CPE management solution - the Motorola Netopia) Broadband Server."

Vincent Poulbere, principal analyst at Ovum, said: "In Europe, 30 to 40 percent of the cellular traffic is generated from inside the home. Femtocells provide a more efficient way for operators to manage traffic generated indoors, compared to the outdoor macrocells of the public cellular infrastructure. In Western Europe, we forecast that 12 million femtocells will be deployed in 2010 rising to 17 million in 2011."{moscomment}
