Avocent Announces New SwitchView Secure Desktop KVM Switching Device E-mail
Avocent Corporation (NASDAQ: AVCT) today launched the SwitchView SC 200 KVM switch.  The switch allows users such as security analysts to safely access data stored on multiple computers, each operating at different levels of classification, while switching from just one keyboard, monitor and mouse, saving time and reducing complexity.

>
In environments without secure switches, users in the past have typically required a separate keyboard, monitor and mouse to access data from each classification’s separate storage area, requiring more desktop space for the equipment.  With a secure switch, users can have one keyboard, monitor and mouse instead of potentially four, providing cost savings.

Common Access Card (CAC) readers, used to identify and authenticate users, can be connected via a USB port on the switch, allowing access to up to eight connected computers, saving typical government departments from having to purchase one CAC reader per computer.

“While USB by nature is not a secure connection, Avocent has engineered the USB ports on all our secure switches to only recognise human interface devices, such as the CAC reader, ensuring security and data integrity,” said Ed Havlik, ANZ Country Manager for Avocent. “Items such as USB sticks won’t be recognised, so no data can be removed from the secure area.”  Hardware security measures in the new switches include tamper evident tape, chassis intrusion detection and locked memory – all designed to prevent access to internal components.

Each fully secure channel supports video connections that provide 2048 x 1536 video resolution for enhanced viewing of graphical materials such as maps, photos or drawings.  The switch features custom-designed encrypted internal firmware which automatically clears the keyboard buffer immediately after data is transmitted through the switch so no data is ever left in the switch, and uses standard USB and PS/2 protocols.  The 200 series switch models are available in 2-, 4- and 8-port models.

Also today, Avocent launched the cost effective SwitchView SC 100 series that include all features found on the 200 series except the CAC support. The 100 series is available in 2-, 4- and 8-port models.

The new switches range in price from $657 to $1,248 excluding GST.  The SwitchView SC family of KVM desktop switches is Common Criteria validated to EAL 4 and undergoing the validation process to EAL 4+, as are the new switches announced today.
