That said, supplies have proven limited, causing some stores to sell out of stock or to only hold the sale for a limited time before reverting back to a higher price. Having an HD DVD player so tantalizingly cheap has seen some consumers preferring HD DVD over Blu-ray right down to the cost of the player and the associated movies. But given that there are five HD DVD movies to send away for to own and receive free, the HD-A2 is effectively being given away free. Allthough the Blu-ray format has seen price cuts to compatible players, even right down to the PS3 featuring a Blu-ray drive, Blu-ray will remain the more expensive high-def TV viewing option this Christmas, unless Sony does something more to further reduce prices. Sadly the sub-US$ 100 price seems to be more the result of a stock clearance special sale, but even though newer models are on the way, at least the price point has been officially released, giving hope that true and affordable mass market high-dev movie players become much more widespread. Until then, you can watch a growing selected of movies released in HD DVD, should you choose to go down that path, although one technological item still holds hope for consumers – the HD DVD and Blu-ray combo drive. These will definitely cost a lot more than the cheapest high-dev video player, but will go a long way towards ending the format war, and is a welcome move for the industry and consumers.
