Last year it chest beatings about who had the best technology, this time around the game console wars get down to the basics as Microsoft target a price decrease for the Xbox 360 in the major Japanese market.

From November 1st, Japanese fans can pick up an Xbox 360 for even cheaper at 34,800 yen (US$304) down from 39,795 yen (US$348).

By comparison, as of November 11, Sony will introduce the new 40GB PS3 at39,980 yen and the Nintendo Wii rolls off shelves at 25,000 yen.

Microsoft continues to try and woo the hearts and minds of the Japanese consumer, but apart from occasional glimmers of hope (Blue Dragon , Halo 3 and unsubstantiated Xbox 360 Elite sales ), so far the American console has failed to ignite the Japanese imagination.

Though it has had a year head start on the competition and is popular in the important U.S market, the Xbox 360 has failed to shift half a million units in Japan, whilst The Sony PS3 (1.24 million) and Nintendo Wii (3.7 million) have shot past.
