New multimedia enabling extensions for VMware Infrastructure allow Wyse thin clients to display rich multimedia including video.

"The Wyse thin client integration with VMware Infrastructure is a unique solution that takes advantage of the robust VMware platform to create rich multimedia content," said Brian Byun, vice president of global partners and solutions at VMware.

Wyse is one of a growing band of vendors pushing the 'Green IT' message.

"Thin computing is already a greener solution, and by closing the gap between the thin client and PC experience more people will see the benefits of going thin," said Tarkan Maner, President and CEO for Wyse Technology.

The company claims that power consumption can be reduced by up to 90 percent by adopting virtualised desktops and thin clients.

In this model, PCs are replaced by a combination of a thin client on the user's desktop, with the processing performed by a virtual machine running on a server. This arrangement can significantly improving the utilisation of the physical processors involved. The typical PC spends most of its time at low levels of CPU utilisation while it waits for operator interaction or for data to arrive from a storage device or the network. Consolidating multiple users onto one CPU smoothes out these peaks and troughs, delivering comparable performance while using considerably less power.
