I don't know whether it was deliberate or not but Seven's bid for Unwired coming in the midst of the WiMAX World in Chicago could not have been better timed to focus attention on Seven's WiMAX ambitions.

WiMAX World USA, the fourth annual event in the series has over 150 exhibitors and is expected to attract over 7,000 visitors, a quadrupling of the initial event in 2004. More important than size, it has become the occasion for a slew of announcements from all the major players in the WiMAX game and the overall impression is that, after much delay, mobile WiMAX is really almost upon us.

And at the end of the day, it is Unwired's WiMAX potential, principally its spectrum, that Seven is really after. Announcing the bid, http://www.itwire.com/content/view/14647/127/ Seven chairman, Kerry Stokes, said: "We're acquiring a strong business and spectrum that will build our company's abilities to compete in new media technologies. Despite delays in certification of the technology to date, we believe in the potential of WiMAX as a mobile broadband solution and as an efficient platform for delivering content solutions in multicast and broadcast environments.

"While Unwired's business has the potential to be very successful, it faces substantial capital requirements and execution risk in expanding its network to deploy WiMAX technology."

So let's have a look at some of the announcements coming out of WiMAX world that are likely to make Kerry feel comfortable parting with around $120 million for Unwired.

One of the most exciting consumer products previewed at WiMAX World was the Nokia Nseries Internet Tablets, expected to be among the first WiMAX-enabled open Internet devices and expected to ship in 2008.
