"While Unwired's business has the potential to be very successful, it faces substantial capital requirements and execution risk in expanding its network to deploy WiMAX technology. This offer delivers significant value to shareholders today for the future potential of the company. Unwired has the majority of licensed spectrum in the WiMAX designated 2.3GHz and 3.5GHz bands in major population centres and some regional areas covering about 64 per cent of Australia's total population. These areas include Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra and Queanbeyan, regional south Western Australia, the NSW central coast and Newcastle, Geelong and surrounding areas. It currently provides wireless broadband services to residential, home office and small to medium enterprise markets in Sydney and Melbourne. It had approximately 70,000 customers at the end of June 2007. However the original claimed advantage of its service - that it was available where ADSL was not - has long since been largely neutralised, its speed is well below that of ADSL services and its remaining advantage: portability and nomadicity is being rapidly eroded by lower prices on 3G data services and, particularly by the new Virgin Mobile service which bundles voice and data through fixed 3G wireless terminal. |
