Held in Hyderabad, India, Griffin spoke to delegates on Monday, September 24: “We are planning many missions. Our long-term game-plan is to put man on Mars by 2037, so that by 2057, when the International Aeronautical Congress (IAC) holds its centenary, we should be celebrating the 20th year of putting man on the red planet.”

Griffin spoke about NASA’s plans to begin manned exploration of the Moon by 2020, with manned exploration of Mars beginning a decade later. He said, "With manned mission to moon from 2020 onwards and Mars a decade later, we want to build a space civilization for tomorrow."

Hyderabad is located in northwestern India. It is the capital city of the state of Andhra Pradesh. Hyderabad has a population of about 6.1 million people.

The IAC is organized each year by the International Astronautical Federation, the International Academy of Astronautics, and the International Institute of Space Law. In 2007, it is being hosted by the Astronautical Society of India and the Indian Space Research Organization, the India counterpart to NASA in the United States.

Over 2,500 delegates are participating in IAC-2007 at the Hyderabad International Convention Center, leaders and professionals in the fields of space science and technology.
