Draw! First Person Shooter shootout E-mail

Halo 3 is about to arrive, with hoards of salivating fans poised with wallets in hand.  But there are many other worthy First Person Shooters on or near the market to compete with the Master Chief.  Has there been a better time to possess the body of a hard-arse violent in-game gun-toter?

This holiday season is shaping up as a shootout between the top guns of first person action.

Going all platform agnostic for a moment, these next few months are shaping up as some of the best for First Person Shooter fans whatever electronic machinery you have at home.

If you are a Wii owner and a FPS fan, then things are a little light on, suiting up as Samus Aran in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption being one of the few blast-athons coming.

Meanwhile you can already be playing Medal of Honour: Airborne on PC and Xbox 360 (coming to PS3 in November), though it falls into the “oh no, not another WWII shooter” category, the “air-drop into scenario” feature truly adds a breath of fresh gun-smoke to the theatre of war.  Medal of Honour: Airborne is a true alternative to the Halo 3 milieu.

Coming soon is the multiplayer fun of Quake Wars: Enemy Territory, the wonder of Crysis and the simulation of Operation Flashpoint 2: Cold War Crisis.  All these games available on the home of FPS, the PC.  Quake Wars will also appear on the Xbox 360 and brings a new level of online multiplayer both friendly to “newbies” and veterans alike.

Operation Flashpoint 2: Cold War Crisis will also be available for Xbox 360 and PS3, but will not hit stores until the new year.  Hard-core modern warfare fans can catch up with the work of Bohemia Interactive by grabbing hold of Armed Assault right now.  With a strong community of dedicated players, Armed Assault throws players into realistic combat scenarios on a fictional island.

PS3 owners can hang on for the fascist struggles contained in Killzone 2 next year, hopefully a step up from the originals rather run-of-the-mill game-play.

The other big FPS of this year will be Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, both breaking away from its WWII roots, whilst returning to the PC platform roots where it began.  Based on the multiplayer beta code, COD4 will provide a polished experienced to rival even the great Battlefield experience.

On Xbox 360 and PS3 COD4 will be melting online servers for a long time after its release on November 5th.

So regardless of whether your FPS bent strays more to the single player indulgence and atmosphere of the excellent BioShock , or the frenzied multiplayer of the games mentioned above.  Whether you like the Western setting of Call of Juaraz or special operations of games such as F.E.A.R (expansions due soon) or Rainbow 6: Las Vegas, there are many choices and experiences awaiting the aficionado of the broad genre First Person Shooter.

Of course there will also be Halo 3, should be no trouble finding some active servers to play this phenomenon when it is released to a now suspecting public, tomorrow.
