PS3 goes “back to basics” with games focus E-mail

Playing games is what the Playstation has been about since inception, despite the additional desire to transform the PS3 into the ultimate home entertainment machine for video, audio, gaming, computing, interacting and even creating content – but without games first and foremost, the rest follows much more slowly, if at all.

Sony’s admission that the release of the PS3 hasn’t gone quite to plan is no surprise, given the sales figures putting the games-first focused Nintendo Wii at the top of the charts in global sales, Xbox 360 in second and the PS3 in third spot.

Kazuo Hirai, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, was reported by the Associated Press to have said at the Tokyo Game Show keynote that "The results we have produced so far have been unfortunate" regarding PS3’s sales of only five million units globally so far.

The upcoming end-of-year Christmas/holidays gift giving season is nearly upon us, and is the best opportunity any console maker has to massively expand their user base and sell games.

The AP quoted Hirai as saying, in regards to gaming as a core PS3 capability, that “We must get back to basics”. Now that the PS3’s entertainment center and DVD/Blu-ray playback capabilities are well established and are being improved upon with new updates, the focus has finally gone back to games – the battleground a games console competes on!

Hirai’s other big move was to introduce the DualShock 3, which is basically exactly the same controller you have now but with rumble re-introduced.

11 upcoming games are now coming rumble equipped out of the box, including Capcom’s Devil May Cry 4 and Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4. and thanks to the wonders of an online network for PS3 owners to connect to, with existing games able to be updated through the Playstation Network to work with the rumble controller as expected when the games manufacturer releases the patch.

Once Sony’s lawsuit with Immersion had been settled, it was only a matter of time before rumble was reintroduced. It’s just a pity we had to wait all this time to get it – the settlement could have occurred much earlier and rumble could have been with us all this time.

But that’s what happened, and the important thing is that rumble is back. Yes, it’s a shame it can’t just be enabled via a firmware update and needs instead to be replaced by a new controller, but at least the rumble is back for those that want it – and that’s likely to be a lot of people.

Hirai spoke about the PSP and the Remote Play capabilities, with the PSP able to be used as an additional screen or even as a PS3 controller when you’re with your PS3, and when you’re away from it, you can take advantage of the Remote Play capabilities.

So, what happened to the rumored US $399 40GB PS3 and the US $99 PS2? And why has the Second Life-esque Home virtual world been delayed until Spring 2008? Please read onto page 2 for the conclusion...
