Yet, with the addition of a dimensional twist, Super Paper Mario instantly – and quite literally - gains a depth of challenge not seen in a long time. ![]() Beginning the game as Mario, players use the Wii controller in traditional video game mode, with no motion detection required. Running and leaping around the flat paper world of Mario will be instantly familiar. Hopping on enemies, collecting coins, slinking down pipes and collecting items are the game elements providing the building blocks of so much more. Very early on, Mario is tasked with collecting the mystical “pure hearts” of the Ancients. So off he bounds on his quest, aided by the rainbow butterfly “Pixl” Tippi. Tippi guides our hero by allowing hints to be displayed on the screen (simply by pointing the Wii-mote at an interesting point on the screen) as well as explaining Mario’s new ability – flipping into 3D mode. At anytime, but for a limited time, Mario can flip the normal 2D world into a 3D perspective, revealing un-seen items and directions to travel. These 3D secrets coupled with expert level design maintain a puzzle element to the game that is masterfully challenging and satisfying at the same time. ![]() Mario will meet up with other playable character, Princess Peach, Bowser and Luigi, all with their own special abilities. Only Mario can flip to 3D, but you can change characters at anytime to solve specific challenges. Adding to the depth and complexity of the game, are the Pixl’s. Tippi, Mario’s original Pixl companion is only the first of many that float along with our hero, providing even further special abilities to traverse the “Paper” world. There are also character cards, special items and recipes to encounter along the way, all must be considered when determining how to progress. Super Paper Mario is another triumph of Nintendo design, providing stimulation for eyes, fingers, ears and brain that will again buoy your spirits and remind you why you purchased that Wii to begin with. |
