Rogue Amoeba's MakeiPhoneRingtone is a free utility for preparing AAC files for use as iPhone ringtones.

"[U]ltimately, if Apple wants to lock out home brewed ringtones, they can. That said, we'll do our best to keep MakeiPhoneRingtone working with iTunes updates," said CEO Paul Kafasis.

MakeiPhoneRingtone automates the process of persuading iTunes that an AAC file really is a ringtone. Once added to the library, iTunes takes care of syncing the ringtones with the iPhone.

Ambrosia Software previously released iToner, a $US15 utility for the same purpose. It subsequently released version 1.0.1 for compatibility with iTunes 7.4.1.

Apple's iTunes Store charges $US0.99 for making a ringtone from a track that has been previously purchased for $US0.99.
