Download counter a welcome addition to Nokia Maps E-mail

If you've got a nasty shock from your mobile bill at the end of the month after using the mapping feature on your new Nokia handset, you'll appreciate this feature in the new release.

It happened to me. I got an N95 on a $49 capped plan from Optus, but the cap does not include data charges. And in the first month I almost doubled that through just in a few brief experiments with the mapping feature.

The way Nokia Maps works is that every time you use GPS to find your location the handset will download the map for that area. If you don't travel to widely and don't fill up your phone's memory with music, videos and photos then once you've got the maps downloaded for the places you visit you're OK. The first version gave you no indication of how much data you were downloading.

If you have access to a Windows PC you can go and download maps for the area of your choice over any broadband connection using the free Nokia Map Loader for PCs application (and that has been upgraded also). I run a Mac, not yet an Intel one, and I haven't got around to imposing on a friend with a PC to do the download.

Nokia Maps and Nokia Map Loader for PCs were launched in February. Announcing the upgrade to Nokia Maps at the Canalys Navigation forum in Barcelona, Michael Halbherr head of the location-based experience team in Nokia Multimedia, said: "We have taken a lot of the consumer feedback that we received when we launched Nokia Maps and are feeding that into the next versions of the product.

"Many people were saying that they didn't know how much data they were using, so we have added a data download counter in the map view. We also added a GPS status indicator so that you know when your device is connected to the satellites."

The updated version also comes with a three-day trial turn-by-turn navigation license free of charge. "With this trial users can try out the service over a weekend holiday or a short business trip and discover the convenience of having a personal navigation device integrated into their mobile," Halbherr said.

He added: "We are happy to report that we have a new and improved PC Map Loader available for users to download...[It] transfers the maps up to 10 times faster than the first version and enables downloading the voice guidance files."

Nokia is also updating the map coverage during the second half of 2007 to bring the total number of countries covered to over 150, with more than 50 of them navigable. {moscomment}
