Dodo and NewSat are teaming to provide a rural broadband service that they say will set a new benchmark for lowest price and best performance.

Plans will start at less than $A20 per month, but there is no clear indication of the speed or data allowance that will buy.

The service will seek Australian Broadband Guarantee funding, and Dodo has set a target of 12,000 remote customers by June 30, 2008.

"Now Australians at work and home in the outback will be able to access internet voice communication, data transfer, web browsing and emails, and even video streaming over Dodo Satellite powered by NewSat," said Dodo MD Larry Kestelman.

"Dodo is pleased to partner with NewSat to deliver communications to the outback and even those black spots not so far from regional Australia’s cities and towns," he added.

The service will use ViaSat's SurfBeam technology, which has also been selected for the consumer satellite broadband service about to be launched in Germany by Eutelsat, and is already in use serving more than 250,000 homes in North America. Based on the same DOCSIS standards used for cable broadband, SurfBeam is capable of download speeds up to 4Mbps and uploads up to 1Mbps. The Eutelsat service will be initially limited to 2Mbps/384Kbps.

“We are delighted to add NewSat's world class technology and expertise to the joint venture with Dodo," said NewSat MD Adrian Ballintine.

"This is the first time ViaSat's SurfBeam technology has been deployed in the Australasian region, so it is quite an achievement for NewSat," he added. "We saw the opportunity to step ahead of the prevailing market technology in Australia and now will be able to deliver the best of breed consumer satellite connection and quality, arguably superior to the existing satellite service in Australia up to now."

In related news, Dodo Satellite Pty Ltd has acquired $500,000 of ordinary shares in NewSat Limited.
