Cost-effective backhaul is the promise made to cellphone operators by RAD Data Communications for its LA-130 gateway.

Designed for installation at cell sites, the device can combine 2G, 3G and HSDPA traffic for transport over DSL links.

"Since backhaul traffic is going to rise exponentially as new, bandwidth hungry technologies, such as HSDPA, are introduced, mobile service providers are desperate for innovative solutions that will lower costs," said Udi Furman, MD of RAD Data Communications Australia.

"[T]he LA-130 is the only cellular backhauling device on the market that combines ATM, pseudowire and DSL all in one box, providing a versatile transport solution for the use of either ATM or IP DSLAMs," he added.

The half-width 1U device incorporates clock recovery algorithms to maintain synchronisation with the rest of the cellular network, and can be used with bonded SHDSL or ADSL2+ connections.
