The NAS200 from Linksys is a NAS product with built-in media streaming capability aimed at the consumer market.

With two SATA drive bays (BYO drives), the $A249.95 NAS200 simplifies the provision of shared storage on a home or small office network.

The internal drives can be configured as two separate units, as one volume, or as RAID 0 or 1. A pair of USB interfaces allows portable drives (including flash drives) to be shared, but there is apparently no provision for backing up directly from internal to external drives, or for attaching a printer.

Gigabit Ethernet interfaces are becoming increasingly common PCs - especially those positioned as media systems - but the NAS 200 is limited to 10/100 Ethernet.

The NAS200 includes HTTP and FTP clients allowing downloading without involving a PC once the transfer has been initiated, but there is no mention of a BitTorrent client.

The built-in UPnP media server can send multiple audio and video streams to a client PC or a compatible media player, and is capable of handling multiple HD streams according to Linksys officials.

The device can also act as a remotely-accessible streaming, web, and ftp server.

PC backup software is included.

"Digital photos, music, and videos are requiring more storage capacity than ever before as the connected home continues to grow. The NAS200 is an expandable home network appliance that is designed to allow users to easily add storage space to their network," said Graeme Reardon, Linksys' regional director for Australia and New Zealand.
