Namely, a couple of programmers from iPhoneSIMfree.com have contacted journalists from Engadget and now CNN to ‘prove’ that their software-only iPhone crack really works, and that it would be arriving ‘soon’. To date, only two iPhone cracks are truly known to work – the crack using a Turbo SIM card that doesn’t require you to open up your iPhone but does require a SIM card reader/writer and other technical knowledge - and the hardware crack developed by an American teenager which requires a soldering iron, a steady hand, steady nerves and, once again, some technical knowledge. Of course, since the Engadget and CNN articles have appeared over the past week or more, nothing has emerged from the www.iPhoneSIMfree.com or UniquePhone web sites, other than delays and excuses. At least UniquePhone’s website has a video clip showing what purports to be an unlocked iPhone, but the video is so blurry that it’s difficult to take these people seriously. After all, who’s to say that the supposed software-only iPhone unlocks haven’t been achieved by the Turbo SIM method, which is reported to actually work 100% once all the SIM card reading/writing/cloning etc has taken place? Given that I actually own an iPhone here in Australia, with my own review to come soon, I’m naturally very keen to see if these software only hacks and cracks are real, or are but a figment of a fellow iPhone owning addict’s imagination, and have delayed worrying about Turbo SIMs or soldering irons. The iPhone hackers have all said they’re trying to make money with their software only cracks. But they should forget about actually trying to make any money from it… after all, what’s to stop the paid iPhone crack hack being hacked itself, so the paid hack suddenly becomes a free hack, available from any p2p or torrent site all over the Net? So, iPhone hackers and crackers… if you really do have an iPhone crack, it’s time to stop the crock and release it onto the Internet, lest you be forever known as just a bunch of iPhony’s. |
