The final update - barring the need for any subsequent security patches - to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is close to hand, according to reports.

According to AppleInsider, developers report that almost all known issues have been ironed out of the current build.

10.4.11 reportedly addresses a wide range of subsystems including networking, storage, audio, video, graphics, PDF and Safari. Around 20 specific bugs in 10.4.10 have apparently been fixed.

This suggests 10.4.11 will be available in the next few weeks.

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is due in October.

Apple's previous practice has been to stop development of each major release of the operating system once its successor goes on sale, although it does issue security updates for the final version of the '.n-1' release. Thus earlier this month the company released Security Update 2007-007 for Mac OS X 10.3.9 as well as 10.4.10.
