Microsoft's Mega Patch Tuesday E-mail

A larger than usual collection of patches has been released by Microsoft just ahead of Elvis's anniversary on Thursday.

What's the connection? None really, but we might not find a better opportunity to mention the King during the next couple of days.

The August collection of security bulletins from Microsoft covers six critical and three important issues - and once again, Vista features in the 'critical' patch list.

Critical issues allowing remote code execution have been addressed in XML Core Services, OLE Automation, Excel, Internet Explorer (two), and GDI.

Important issues allowing remote code execution (but presumably with mitigating factors) apply to Windows Media Player and Vista's Gadgets.

Virtual PC and Virtual Server are subject to an privilege elevation attack.

Notably, the Macintosh versions of Office (one critical and one important bulletin) and Virtual PC (one important bulletin) are included in this month's patches.
