Want a next generation gaming console, but a quick look into the dark depths of your wallet leave you mournful?  Well as of today, you can pick up a Xbox 360 console in Australia for the same price as the Nintendo Wii.

Microsoft Australia announced the local follow-up to Xbox 360 price reductions overseas.

With only two systems on offer in this country – still no Elite for Oz – It makes the choice simple.  Pretty much it comes down to a Hard Drive or no Hard Drive decision.

The Core Console has dropped to a Wii competitive AU$399.95 whilst the more attractive Pro version has also had a price drop to AU$579.95.

Even the despite the hyperbole of the words below from the press release, this does indeed represent a significant shift in the local market.  One of the major Wii’s competitive advantages has now effectively been snuffed out.

Dependent on consumer needs the Xbox 360 offers a far superior line-up of software, a robust online experience (though something will need to change in the future here as far as charging for the service) and assurances of improved Xbox 360 reliability.

So if you are happy to accept the risk of Xbox 360 breakdown, which looks to be the biggest Microsoft hurdle to an improved market share, price does no-longer seem to be a barrier.   Until Nintendo drop their price of course.

From the release;
SYDNEY 15 August 2007 - Today Microsoft announced that effective immediately it has lowered the price of the Xbox 360TM video game and entertainment system in Australia. Underlining its already terrific value, the Xbox 360 console is now available from a recommended retail price of $399.95.

With over 200,000 consoles and over one million games sold in Australia, a record-setting attach rate of 6 games per console sold*, the Xbox 360 console has proven itself as a leading platform for interactive home entertainment. In conjunction with its amazing upcoming games lineup, the new price means there has never been a better time to jump in to Xbox 360.

David McLean, Xbox Regional Director, Australia and New Zealand, says, "Xbox 360 is all about offering consumers a choice - and I think we've just made that choice even easier.

Today's announcement shows Xbox 360 delivering on our commitment to make next-generation entertainment accessible to as many Australians as possible. Whether you want high definition** movies and digital downloads, whether you want to join an online community of over 7 million people, or whether you just want to jump straight into a game and have fun."
