TelstraClear is to launch cellphone services in New Zealand as a mobile virtual network operator on Telecom NZ's CDMA network.

TelstraClear will launch the service later this year under its own brand name with is own a range of mobile services, bundles and prices. It will offer customers of its other services a single bill covering fixed and mobile telephony and data services.  The company says more details will be provided closer to the launch date, which has not been specified.

According to TelstraClear CEO Allan Freeth, "The fact that Telecom and TelstraClear can come to a commercial agreement like this is something that will really benefit customers, and quickly." Telcom NZ acting CEO, Simon Moutter said the agreement was "a positive move for the wider telecommunications industry."

Neither side is keen to have the deal described as an MVNO arrangement, even though it is. Telecom NZ spokeswoman Katherine Murphy told iTWire "it is a commercial resale agreement: it is being run through our corporate retail arm not our wholesale division. They will be a customer of Gen-i...One of the reasons we decided to run it through Gen-i is that TelstraClear's customer base is predominantly business and we decided we would be able to deliver them specialised business products and services better through a commercial retail agreement."

TelstraClear, however is adamant that it will be responsible for its own products and services and acknowledges that it is an MVNO on the Telecom NZ network but prefers not to use that term.
"We are staying away from the acronym because most people don't really understand it "TelstraClear's head of wholesale, Raymond O'Brien told iTWire. "Telecom manages the relationship out of Gen-i because that is where they have all their project and account management."

Telecom NZ presently operates a CDMA network but is committed to building a 3G WCDMA network which will become operational in 12-24 months time. TelstraClear's agreement will be extended to services on that network, O'Brien said. "The CDMA network is technically the best network in New Zealand. It has the best throughput and the best coverage. The downside is that there is no migration path."
