Halo 3 pre-orders reach the 1 million mark in U.S E-mail

Bungie’s third iteration of the popular Xbox exclusive is continuing the hype on the Xbox 360 with pre-orders for the soon to be released game reaching a milestone 1 million mark.

Making it the official ‘most anticipated’ game in history with U.S pre-orders alone going over 1 million, Halo 3 is destined to beat its predecessor (obviously, Halo 2) in record sales.  Halo 2 sold 2.4 million copies on the first day of its release in 2004.

September 25th is Halo 3 release day, and already it looks like the ‘Legendary Edition’ of the game will be sold out on that day.

The other two versions of the game, Limited and the Standard edition, should also be whipped off game retailer shelves at a remarkable rate upon launch..

Some analysts have predicted that the Halo bubble might burst, causing heartache at Redmond leading up to the important holiday sales period.  Microsoft are banking on a resurgence of Xbox 360 sales on the back of Halo 3’s release, coupled with recent price reductions of the hardware.

As a launch title, the original Halo was a ‘must have’ for the first Xbox.  Given the feedback of the recent Halo 3 multiplayer beta test on the Xbox 360, it will be interesting to see how well (beyond the legion of die-hard fans) the game will do, given the strong line-up of similar titles in the Xbox 360 library all ready.  The Beta indeed gave a return to typical Halo game-play that we all loved in the franchised shooter.  The only downer really was the glut of Xbox 360 games that already give a similar multiplayer experience.

Still it seems the aforementioned Halo fans are queuing up already, guaranteeing Bungie and Microsoft can notch another mark on the ‘we got a hit’ bed-post.

“What we’ve experienced is nothing short of phenomenal,” said Bob McKenzie, senior vice president of merchandising at GameStop Corp. “‘Halo 3’ has eclipsed many previous records and will prove to be one of the must-have items of 2007.”

“The excitement for ‘Halo 3’ is incredible,” said Jill Hamburger, vice president of movies and games at Best Buy. “From our preorders online and the buzz we’re hearing in our stores, we know this release is going to be one of the biggest entertainment events of the year. We’re thrilled to be able to bring it to our customers.”
