Alvarion, which a been flagged as potential supplier of WiMAX gear to the Optus Elders joint venture, Opel, has teamed up with Verso Technologies to provide technology that will deliver voice services over fixed WiMAX networks.

Under the agreement Alvarion will act as a reseller for Verso's MetroNet VoIP overlay product, positioning it as a value-added solution with Alvarion's existing BreezeMAX fixed WiMAX product line.

The offering is claimed to "provide everything a service provider will need to offer voice services over WiMAX." The solution includes Clarent Class-4 and Class-5 features, media gateway, media server, IP centrex, and back office reporting and provisioning." Verso claims that it can be rolled out quickly and is scalable, accommodating as few as 2,500 subscribers to more than one million subscribers.

According to Verso CEO, Steve Odom, "WiMAX is already one of the fastest growing sectors in the telecommunications market and there exists no comparable technology that even gets close to the economics that it delivers. As the WiMAX market expands, our ability to offer providers like Alvarion complete voice over WiMAX capabilities means we will be able to capture a significant piece of the WiMAX market."{moscomment}
