Craig Eisler, the recently appointed general manager of Microsoft's Mac Business Unit, said "Delivering Office at the right quality level is super important to the entire team and to Microsoft's long standing commitment to the Mac platform, and it was clear from our June and July quality checkpoints that no matter how hard we tried, we couldn't release our product in time for the Christmas season with the kind of quality we wanted." A mid-January ship date implies that Microsoft still hopes to deliver Office 2008 in time for Macworld San Francisco. The biggest event on the Mac calendar, next year's Expo is scheduled for January 14 to 18. "Starting in September, we are planning a series of 'sneak peeks' to show you more of the features and functionality of this release," added Eisler. What form they will take remains to be seen. One possibility is a series of animations, similar to those offered by Apple to show off features of the forthcoming Mac OS X 10.5. The delay to Office 2008 also means the final version of the Open Office XML file converter for Office 2003 will be delayed, as it includes code from Office 2008. This means Mac users will have been kept waiting for over a year for the converter, as Office 2007 shipped to corporate customers in November 2006. The debut of Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.0 has also been postponed until after Office 2008's arrival. RDC 2.0, released in beta form this week, allows Windows computers to be operated across a network from a Mac. "We're in an 'all hands on deck' mode right now to ensure Office 2008 gets finished on time," explained Eisler. |
