Porn finds its way to Blu-ray E-mail

Sony's reluctance to allow pornography onto Blu-ray has been cited as one of that HD format's barriers to success. But things have changed.

According to an IDG report, at least one Taiwanese disc manufacturer has obtained a pressing machine from Sony and hooked up with the Japanese adult video industry.

Mainstream movie companies - notably Sony (the originator of Blu-ray) and Disney (another member of the Blu-ray camp) - are averse to any porn links. Sony's disc pressing subsidiary will not touch adult material, and Disney will not allow its products to be manufactured by companies that also process adult discs.

The reason is probably as much pragmatic as moral: it would be extremely embarrassing if an adult product was accidentally mislabelled as a Disney movie.

Backers of the competing HD DVD format have apparently been more accommodating to the adult video industry.
