Samsung Electronics claims its use of the DisplayPort video interface on its new 30in LCD panel is a world's first.

The VESA-sanctioned DisplayPort standard is expected to supersede the DVI, LVDS and VGA interfaces.

DisplayPort's 10.8Gbps data rate allows 2560 x 1600 resolution on a single interface without colour smear.

"We are pleased to be the first LCD manufacturer in the world to create a panel with a DisplayPort interface," said Brian Berkeley, vice president of Samsung's LCD business. "We have received many inquiries from computer integrators interested in DisplayPort-based LCD panels, which prompted an acceleration of our R&D for this first DisplayPort LCD panel."

The new panel also boasts a 180 degree viewing angle, and 300 nits brightness.

Mass production is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2008.
