GOLD Coast-based satellite mobile company Globalstar is set to launch a Big Brother style service enabling businesses to track assets outside cellular phone range at half the cost.
The service named TracerTrak will be launched in July and uses Globalstar’s breakthrough Simplex technology to monitor the location, activity and behaviours of assets in Australia and its surrounding waters. The key component of the service is an AxTracker tracking device. The tracking device comes in two forms with the T3 measuring 20cm x 15cm x 2.5cm, and the MMT measuring 28cm x 10cm x 2.5cm. The tracking device is simply attached to the asset to be tracked and regularly sends updates to the Globalstar constellation of 40 low earth orbit satellites. Depending on the frequency of location updates the in-built battery can provide up to 7 years of service. The product will come as financial relief for many companies with the T3 retailing for $799 and the MMT for $699, in comparison with the $2000-$3000 price tag for an average satellite modem. Globalstar managing director Peter Bolger said the TracerTrak was a superior product at less than half the price. “This product can be used from semi-trailers, shipping containers to caravans,” said Mr Bolger. “The AxTracker MMT is intended to be used for standard tracking services whilst the T3 not only keeps track of where your assets are, but can also monitor behaviours, such as opeing the door of a shipping container. “Security is a major drawcard of the product, however, loss prevention was a major consideration in our research feedback.” Mr Bolger said many companies’ assets were actually lost not stolen. ``With all the companies moving shipping containers around Australia, it is pretty easy for one or two to go missing,’’ said Mr Bolger. ``They could be lying forgotten in a storage yard somewhere when a vital delivery is needed. “The beauty of the TracerTrak is that it will pick up where it is and the fact that it is inactive. ``We are also preparing to launch applications targeted at the maritime market tracking commercial and pleasure craft, the caravan market and environmental monitoring” The TracerTrak system utilises a web browser to map the equipment’s journey. The system can also signal an alarm that can be sent to email and via SMS whenever unusual activities are encountered such as entering or leaving a pre-defined geographical location.. The release of the new product follows the launch of four more satellites by its US-based technology partner Globalstar Inc. Globalstar is a privately owned satellite technology company and is a sister of the expanding Think Mobile operation.
