Today’s Nintendo press conference at E3 contained a lot of self-back slapping, smattered with statistics about how gamer profiles had changed, games in the pipeline, new Wii channels and something called the Wii Zapper.

Reggie Fils-Aime Nintendo of America’s president opened the conference with “… I’m Happy..”.  And he should be, according to Nintendo game sales are up across the world.  Specifically 46 percent in North America, 42 percent in the UK and a whopping 114 percent in Japan.

Fils-Aime continued, speaking about the wide demographic that now play Nintendo products, including a shift to more female participation, now 33 percent.

The continual question about developer support for the Nintendo platforms was raised.  According to Fils-Aime, currently there are 60 Wii and 300 DS games on the market, with another 100 games coming to the Wii and 140 for the DS before the end of the year.

Hardware wise, Nintendo revealed some new peripherals:

The new Wii Wheel steering wheel controller will come packaged with Mario Kart Wii early in 2008.

Possibly inspired by Sony’s eye-toy Kinetic, Nintendo showed off the WiiFit, a wireless connected flat ‘balance board’ intended to bring a range of activities to all members of the family.  An exercise in exercising, covering aerobics, muscle conditioning, yoga, and balance.  WiiFit will track your statistics over the months, including a charting of your bodies mass index.

The Wii Zapper will house the current Wii controllers (the Wii-mote and Nunchuck) to create a new shooting style controller.  Fils-Aime stated that Capcoms upcoming Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles along with Sega;s Gost Squad and EA’s Medal of Honor will be built with the Wii Zapper in mind.

There will also be a bundled Nintendo Wii Zapper project which will have the peripheral on the market for US$19.99.  Nintendo’s stated aim for the Wii Zapper is to break the barrier of First Person Shooter titles, making them accessible to all.

At the press conference the attendees also given demonstrations of upcoming first and third party titles; Soul Calibur Legends, WWE Smackdown Vs. Raw, Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword, Dragon Quest Swords, and Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games, Fils-Aime moved on to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which he said would launch this year in the U.S. on December 3rd.

Super Mario Galaxy
, the best looking Wii game to date is slated for a November 12th  release.

Nintendo were also upbeat about the control system for the anticipated Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, the “lock-on free aiming” system allowing players to lock on to enemies by aiming anywhere on the screen (?) touted as a revolution in FPS control.

The new WiiWare garage games channel along with a new Mii orientated channel, the Check Me Out Channel were also showcased at the conference

Nintendo are happy, but not completely satisfied, seeing this period in the video game industry as a turning point towards the stated aim of Nintendo to bring fun to the masses.
